How a hole gets filled
After you erase, the tool has to invent pixels nobody photographed. The instant fill uses push–pull interpolation, a technique from computer graphics research (Gortler et al., "The Lumigraph", 1996). It builds a pyramid of ever-smaller versions of the image that skip the unknown pixels, then works back down, filling each gap from the coarser level. Step through it:
The checkered oval is the hole left by the object you erased. We know every pixel around it, none inside.
Push–pull is excellent at continuing smooth gradients: skies, painted walls, out-of-focus backgrounds. It can't invent structure, so a tiled floor or a line of text comes out as a smooth smudge. That's where the AI clean-up helps: a generative image model looks at the whole photo and repaints the masked area with plausible texture.
Tips for clean results
- Paint a little beyond the object's outline, and include its shadow and reflection.
- Remove large objects in two or three smaller passes instead of one big stroke.
- If a fill looks smeared, press Undo and repaint with a slightly larger margin.
Questions people ask
How do I remove an object or person from a photo?
Drop the photo, paint over the object (and its shadow) with the brush, and press Erase. The gap is filled instantly on your device from the surrounding colours. If the area has a pattern, press AI clean-up to have an image model repaint it.
Is it like Google's Magic Eraser?
It solves the same problem. The instant fill runs locally with no upload and works best on smooth areas such as sky, walls, sand and grass. The optional AI clean-up uses a generative image model, similar in spirit to Magic Eraser and Photoshop's Generative Fill, for textured areas.
Is the AI clean-up free?
Yes, within a fair-use limit of 5 clean-ups per hour, since each one costs us a real model call. The instant fill is unlimited.
What gets sent for AI clean-up?
A copy of the photo reduced to about 1024 px and the mask you painted, sent through Vercel AI Gateway to OpenAI's GPT Image 2.5 Flare model. We don't store it. The instant fill sends nothing.
Can I remove text or a watermark?
You can paint over text on your own photos, such as a date stamp or a sign. Don't use it to remove watermarks from images you don't own the rights to; that usually breaks the licence.
