How to remove the background from an image

The five methods that actually work in 2026, when to use each, and what's happening at the edge of a cut-out.

1. In your browser, free (any device)

Open the BGVault background remover, drop or paste your photo, and wait 10–20 seconds while it's processed by an AI model through Vercel AI Gateway. There's no watermark or size limit beyond 2048 px, and only the transparency the model finds is kept; your original pixels are what gets exported. Then:

  1. Drag the before/after slider to check the edge.
  2. If a bit is missing or extra, press Refine with brush and paint it back or away.
  3. Pick None for a transparent PNG, or a colour, photo or blur behind the subject.
  4. Download, or save it to your Vault.

Got a stack of photos? The bulk remover does 50 at a time. For a flat logo or signature on white paper, the colour-key cleaner is more precise than AI.

2. On iPhone or iPad

Apple's Visual Look Up can lift a subject out of a photo on iOS 16 and later:

  1. Open the photo in Photos.
  2. Touch and hold the subject until a glowing outline appears.
  3. Tap Copy, Share or (iOS 17+) Add Sticker.

It's quick for one clear subject. You can't adjust the edge, choose which object is picked when there are several, or export a file at a set size. For those, open the photo in BGVault in Safari; it works on iPhone too.

3. In Photoshop

  1. Open the image and unlock the background layer.
  2. In Window › Properties, click Remove Background under Quick Actions. Photoshop adds a layer mask.
  3. For hair, choose Select › Select and Mask, use the Refine Edge brush along the hairline and tick Decontaminate Colors.
  4. Export as PNG via File › Export › Quick Export as PNG.

Photoshop gives the most control, at the cost of a subscription and a few minutes per image.

4. On Windows

In current Windows 11 builds, Paint has a Remove background button on the toolbar, and the Photos app offers background blur, replace and remove under Edit. Both are one-click and offline, with little edge control. Older Windows versions need a browser tool.

5. On a Mac

In macOS Ventura and later, right-click an image in Finder and choose Quick Actions › Remove Background, which saves a new PNG next to it. In Preview you can also select the subject and copy it. Great for a quick file; no refinement.

Why hair edges go wrong

A camera pixel on the edge of a strand of hair sees both hair and background, and records the mix. To cut it out properly, software has to estimate for each pixel how much of it is subject (its alpha) and then remove the background's share of the colour. Tools that only decide "in or out" produce stair-steps or a light halo. Switch between the three approaches:

Original pixels, 8× zoom
Placed on a new background
50% hair

Stair-stepped strands. Every pixel is either all hair or all sky, which real hair never is.

That's why BGVault uses an AI model instructed to output a soft alpha rather than a hard in/out mask, which is what keeps individual strands of hair and fur in portraits and pet photos.

Questions people ask

What is the easiest way to remove a background from an image?

Use an AI background remover: drop the photo, wait a few seconds, download the PNG. BGVault does this in your browser for free. On an iPhone you can also long-press the subject in Photos and tap Copy or Share.

How do I remove a background on iPhone?

On iOS 16 or later, open the photo in Photos, touch and hold the subject until it glows, then tap Copy or Share. On iOS 17+ you can also tap Add Sticker. It works best on clear subjects such as people, pets and products.

How do I remove a background in Photoshop?

In Photoshop 2021 or later, open the image, find the Properties panel (Window > Properties) and click Remove Background under Quick Actions. Photoshop adds a layer mask you can refine with Select and Mask for hair.

Can I remove a background on Windows without extra software?

Yes. In current Windows 11 builds, open the image in Paint and click Remove background on the toolbar, or use the Photos app's Edit > Background tools. Both need an up-to-date Windows 11.

Why do cut-outs have a white or dark halo?

Edge pixels are a mix of subject and old background. If the tool keeps them at full opacity, you see a rim of the old background colour; if it drops them, edges look jagged. Good tools keep them partly transparent and remove the old colour, as the demo on this page shows.
