When to blur faces

Privacy law differs by country, but the safe habit is simple: if a person is identifiable and hasn't agreed to be published, especially a child, blur them. In the EU and UK, a photo of an identifiable person is personal data under the GDPR, and several countries (France and Germany among them) give people a right to their own image.

  • Blur looks the most natural and suits social posts.
  • Pixelate reads clearly as "deliberately hidden", common in news and documentation.
  • Solid is the only style that removes all information. Use it for documents, IDs and screens.

Questions people ask

How do I blur a face in a photo?

Drop the photo and drag a box over each face. Choose Blur, Pixelate or Solid, set the strength, and download. In Chrome and Edge you may also see a "Find faces automatically" button that uses the browser's built-in face detector.

Can a blurred face be un-blurred?

Light blur and coarse pixelation can sometimes be partly reversed, and researchers have shown that recognition models can still match mildly blurred faces. For real anonymity use strength 70+ or the Solid style. BGVault also adds random noise to the blur so it cannot be sharpened back.

Is the photo uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser. That matters most for exactly the photos you want to anonymise.

Can I blur number plates too?

Yes. Drag a box over any area: plates, house numbers, name badges, screens or documents. Untick Oval shape for a rectangle.
