AI background remover, powered by Vercel AI Gateway

Drop a photo and the subject lifts off its background: hair, fur, bottle edges and all. An AI image model finds the cut-out; your own original-resolution pixels are what gets exported.

What you can do with a clean cut-out

Once the background is gone you control what sits behind the subject. Leave it transparent for a logo, sticker or slide; drop a product on pure white for a marketplace listing; put yourself in front of a new colour, photo or AI-generated scene; or keep the original setting and blur it like a portrait lens.

Everything you finish can go into the Vault, a gallery stored in your own browser, so a morning's product shots are still there when you come back to list them.

Three steps

  1. Drop, paste or pick a photo. JPG, PNG, WebP or a screenshot from your clipboard.
  2. Check the edge. Drag the before/after slider. Soften, tighten or paint back a missed strap with the refine brush.
  3. Choose a background and export. Transparent PNG, WebP or JPG, at original size or 2000 px for shops.

How the AI finds the edge

The remover is a segmentation network: for every pixel it predicts how much of that pixel belongs to the foreground, from 0 (pure background) to 1 (pure subject). That number is the alpha, and it's why a good cut-out keeps the soft wisps of hair instead of chopping them off.

The cut-out is found by GPT Image 2.5 Flare, an OpenAI image model reached through Vercel AI Gateway. Your photo is downscaled and sent to the model, which is instructed to keep the subject untouched and make everything else transparent; BGVault then keeps only that transparency (the alpha) and applies it back to your own full-resolution photo, so the exported cut-out is never a re-drawn or lower-quality copy.

Questions people ask

Is the AI background remover really free?

Yes, free to use within a fair-use hourly limit: no credits to buy, no watermark, no sign-up. Each cut-out is a real call to an AI model through Vercel AI Gateway, which is why there is a limit.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

Your photo is sent to an AI image model (GPT Image 2.5 Flare) through Vercel AI Gateway to find the cut-out. It is processed and returned; BGVault does not store it, and only the alpha (transparency) it returns is kept, applied back to your own original-resolution photo. The background generator and object-remover clean-up work the same way: your image, or just your prompt, is sent to the Gateway to be processed and is not stored by BGVault.

How well does it handle hair and fur?

GPT Image 2.5 Flare is asked to keep the subject exactly as it is and make everything else transparent, which generally keeps soft hair and fur edges. You can then soften, tighten or brush-correct the edge with the controls below the result.

Why does it take longer than a local tool?

Each photo is processed by a cloud AI model rather than in your browser, so a cut-out typically takes 10–20 seconds instead of instantly. In exchange, edge quality doesn't depend on your device's power.

What file should I download?

PNG keeps full transparency and is accepted everywhere. WebP also keeps transparency at a much smaller size, good for websites. JPG has no transparency, so pick it only when you have placed the subject on a colour or photo background.

Can I remove backgrounds from many images at once?

Yes. The bulk background remover takes up to 20 images, applies the same background, crop and size to each, and gives you one ZIP.
